OpenOBD — Support

OpenOBD turns your iPhone into a real-time car dashboard using an OBD2 (ELM327) adapter.

Getting started

1. Plug an ELM327 OBD2 adapter into your car’s OBD2 port.
2. Open OpenOBD and tap Connect.
3. Choose your adapter (Bluetooth or Wi-Fi). To try the app without hardware, choose Demo Mode.

Compatibility and limitations

Standard OBD2 support varies by vehicle, engine, model year and adapter. A value that is not exposed by the vehicle cannot be measured by OpenOBD. Diesel Health and DPF results are preliminary indicators; DPF-specific values are not universally available through generic OBD2.

OpenOBD does not reprogram the ECU, enable hidden vehicle features, change automatic start-stop settings, or disable emissions systems such as the DPF.

Troubleshooting

• Can’t find the adapter? Make sure it’s plugged in, the ignition is on, and Bluetooth is enabled. For Wi-Fi adapters, join the adapter’s Wi-Fi network first.
• No data? Some values depend on your specific vehicle and may not be supported by all cars.
• iPhone Bluetooth Classic? Standard non-MFi Classic adapters do not work on iPhone. Use a BLE or Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter instead.
• Trip stops with the screen locked? Allow background location access (“Always” on iOS) so route recording can continue. OpenOBD starts location updates only for an active trip and stops them when the trip ends.
• Diesel Health is unavailable? Connect to the vehicle and make sure its fuel type is detected or selected as diesel. Individual DPF readings still depend on the data supported by that vehicle.
• Used Car Check? Follow the on-screen steps while safely parked. Results are a preliminary OBD2 snapshot, not a mechanical inspection or vehicle-history report.

Exports and AI analysis

OpenOBD can prepare a diagnostic summary and copy it to your clipboard. The app does not send that text to an AI service automatically. You decide where to paste or share it; review the report first if it contains a VIN or other information you prefer not to share.

Safety

Do not operate the phone while driving. Clearing DTCs also resets emissions readiness; save a report first and clear only when the vehicle is safely parked, with the ignition on and engine off. OpenOBD provides preliminary information and is not a replacement for professional diagnosis.
